By the time cellist Gretta Cohn left Omaha, NE 2005, she had made a lasting impression with (emo) heavy-weights Cursive, in addition to practically every other band calling Saddle Creek Records their home. Having spent the previous four years on the road and in the studio with friends and label mates, including Bright Eyes, Rilo Kiley and The Faint, she moved back to Brooklyn with vague notions of a solo project, but primarily looking for new collaborations.
Happily under the radar, Ryan Smith had been quietly clocking in the hours mastering the toy piano, crafting cleverly orchestrated pop songs, and releasing music under the name A Million Billion, in addition to writing and recording with Brooklyn's much-loved Stars Like Fleas, when he and Gretta shared the stage at a now-defunct New York City venue. A couple chance encounters later, the two found themselves with a heap of homeless songs, a handful of battered and beautiful old instruments, and a brand new band.
Not the types to waste any time, Ryan, Gretta, and a slew of friends went straight into the studio to start tracking what would become Twin Thousands' first official release. Ryan spent the early part of 2007 finishing up the songs in a makeshift home studio, and by the end of May, the Thousands were off to mix with their good friend D. James Goodwin in the woods of upstate NY. Their first single, Like You Lot, will be released by Exercise1 Records in the UK on July 23rd, coinciding with a short tour, bringing the Thousands to Leceister, Brighton, Sheffield, Nottingham, and London.
